Sarah Brightman (born 14 August 1960) is an English classical crossover soprano, actress, songwriter and dancer.
Brightman debuted as a dancer in troupes such as Hot Gossip and later released a string of disco singles. She was a musical theatre performer and partner of theatre composer Andrew Lloyd Webber, with whom she originated roles including Christine Daaé in The Phantom of the Opera. Her 1984 marriage to Andrew Lloyd Webber ended in 1990.
After her divorce, Brightman became a crossover artist with former Enigma producer Frank Peterson. Sarah Geronimo, born as Sarah Asher Tua Geronimo on July 25, 1988, is a famous Filipina singer and actress widely known for her versatility in singing in wide genres like pop, R&B, soul, ballad and her notable vocal belting ability. She is nicknamed as the Asias Pop Princess. She had collaborated with various international artists like Guy Sebastian and Howie Dorough of Backstreet Boys. At fourteen years old, Sarah bested 10 other finalists in the nationwide search for Star For a Night (Philippine Edition) aired over IBC Channel 13 with Asia's Songbird Regine Velasquez as host. Her performance of Celine Dion's To Love You More won her the Grand Prize, winning 1 Million Philippine Pesos and a 10-year recording contract with Viva Records.
In September 2003, Geronimo released her debut album entitled "Popstar: A Dream Come True". The album was awarded 7x platinum, selling more than 350,000 copies. Holly plays acoustic guitar; drummer Jerry Allison slaps his hands on his lap for percussion; Joe B. Mauldin plays a standup acoustic bass; and producer Norman Petty's wife, Vi, plays the celeste (a keyboard instrument with a glockenspiel-like tone, used in such classical pieces as "Dance of the Sugarplum Fairy" from The Nutcracker). The song length is an economical 2 minutes and 5 seconds. The song is ranked #236 on the Rolling Stone magazine's list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.
A cover version recorded by James Taylor was released in 1985, becoming a huge AC hit, and performing moderately well on the Pop and Country charts. Don McLean also covered the song as did Erasure on their 2002 album Other People's Songs. John Denver and The Trashmen have also recorded it, as did indie rock band Rogue Wave. Rock band Pearl Jam performed a rendition live in Lubbock, Texas (Holly's birthplace); it has also been performed live by Deep Purple. "Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress" is a song by the rock and roll group The Hollies. It was released on February 1, 1972, as a single on the Parlophone Records label.
The song's first-person lyrics tell a story of an FBI agent (the narrator) who is scouting a speakeasy in advance of a raid. Prior to the police's arrival, the narrator meets the "long cool woman" of the title, a singer at the bar described as "5'9", beautiful, tall", and immediately falls in love with her. The raid results in a shootout during which he protects her. The narrator is given congratulations by the District Attorney ("the DA man") and, presumably, a relationship with the woman when he gets legal immunity for her.
It was released soon after Allan Clarke, who was featured on both lead guitar and lead vocal, had left the group. It appears on their album Distant Light (1971). As the group had just left EMI/Parlophone and signed with Polydor, they did not promote the song. However, it became a No. 2 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 charts and No. 1 on Cash Box in the United States, their most successful single there, it was also No. 1 in Canada. It was inspired by, and in the style of, the rock and roll group Creedence Clearwater Revival, especially their song Green River. On being reactivated by EMI in Britain a few months later, it reached No. 32 on the UK Singles Chart.
The song is notable in that it features Clarke playing rhythm guitar, something he rarely did. Clarke came up with the signature guitar rhythm that opens the song. "Nights in White Satin" is a 1967 single by The Moody Blues, first featured on the album Days of Future Passed.
"Nights In White Satin" was not a popular song when first released, mainly due to its over seven-minute length. There are two edited versions of the song, both stripped of the orchestra and poetry from the LP version. The first version, with the songwriter's credit shown as "Redwave", was a hasty sounding 3:06 edit of the main song with very noticeable chopped parts. For the second edited version (now credited to Justin Hayward), the main track was kept intact, ending at 4:26. Both versions were backed with a non-LP release, "Cities". The song was re-released in 1972 after the success of such longer-running dramatic songs as "Hey Jude" and "Layla", and it charted at #2 on Billboard magazine and #1 on Cash Box in the United States, earning a gold single for sales of a million copies and was also #1 in Canada. The song also holds the dubious distinction of falling off the Hot 100 from the highest position (#17). It was also released in Spanish as Noches de Seda at the same time. Its original release in the United Kingdom reached #19; in the wake of its US success, the song re-charted in the UK in late 1972 and climbed ten positions higher, to #9. The song was re-released yet again in 1979, and charted for a third time in the UK, at #14.
